What do VERTIGO and HARRY POTTER have in common? What IS the scariest thing about THE BIRDS? Gregory Peck’s not REALLY that dashing, is he? And WHAT was the name of that guy in REBECCA? Laurence someone? All these questions and more are answered in the gang’s long-awaited, double-sized conclusion to the Alfred Hitchcock special. We may be on a reduced schedule through March, but we had to pop in and let you know what we thought of the 2011 Academy Award nominations. There’s lots of yelling and teeth gnashing, impassioned pleas and befuddled muttering, love and hate, pain and strife, life, death, basically the entire human experience. Also some opinions on the Oscars. Check it out!

Wrong Opinions About Movies will return on 29 January with our double-sized conclusion to our Alfred Hitchcock retrospective.

Through March, we’ll be bringing you one episode per month. This is due mainly to one of our hosts (me, it’s me) being two and a half steps away from a nervous breakdown. Apparently I can work full-time and do a weekly podcast, but throw in school and trying to develop a writing career and it all falls down. I’ll be taking a (permanent?) hiatus from school after this term, however, and the podcast will return to a normal weekly schedule at that point.

For now, check back at the end of January for our Hitchcock episode (featuring a very special guest!), and then come back in February for our Studio Ghibli episode, where we’ll have a look at the best of the studio’s films as a lead-in to our review of The Secret Life of Arrietty. And as always, you can subscribe in iTunes to make sure you never miss an episode.

Thanks for your understanding and patience. Talk to you soon!

– Matthew

It’s January and there’s nothing much doing at the movie theatre, but we’ve got your back. Following a quick review of TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY, the Wrong Opinions crew jumps into Alfred Hitchcock month. This episode they take a look at his British films, starting with the silent film THE LODGER (1927) and up through THE LADY VANISHES (1938). Along the way they discuss what makes Hitchcock tick, what makes his films work, and what makes his films uniquely his. It’s a fun and insightful discussion about one of cinema’s true geniuses, and you do not want to miss it.

This week we forego the classic film discussion for two current reviews, as the studios have seen fit to drop all their best films of the year on us at once. Here, then, we discuss not only the controversial new adaptation of Steig Larsson’s novel The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (controversial not so much in it’s subject matter, but in whether or not it should exist at all, given that an excellent adaptation of the film had already been made in 2009), as well as Steven Spielberg’s first foray into animation with The Adventures of Tintin. Matthew also checks in with his thoughts on Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Kati does the same with Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, and Alli discovers Trigun. All in all it’s a jam-packed episode with lots of great discussions, so hit play already!

The game is so totally afoot. This week on WRONG OPINIONS ABOUT MOVIES, we have a special guest joining us: Latino Review and Operation Kino’s Da7e Gonzales! Da7e joins us to offer his expert opinion on the various iterations of Sherlock Holmes, including the two films discussed in this episode: the 1939 Basil Rathbone classic THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES, and the new Robert Downey Jr. vehicle SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS. Along the way Da7e and Alli get caught up on some spooky TV, Matthew checks in on YOUNG ADULT and MY WEEK WITH MARILYN, and everyone wonders how bad a film or show has to get before it stops being entertaining at all. It’s another great episode, with a great guest and some contentious opinions, so hit play, already!

This week, the WRONG OPINIONS crew is divided in the wrong opinions. Just who is the wrongest about THE DESCENDANTS? What’s more, how wrong are Kati and Alli about IMMORTALS? And do Matthew and Alli REALLY like STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP? All that, plus Matthew ranting about the lack of a proper IMAX screen in Portland and his giggly anticipation for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. It’s a fantastic discussion this week, with wildly varying opinions about the topics at hand, so hit play, already!

It’s that time of year! Listen to Alli, Kati, and Matthew wax poetic on some of their favorite holiday-themed films. Some choices are traditional, others less so. Along the way, Matthew tricks Kati into singing, Alli ruins IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE with sex, and Matthew can’t puzzle out how to pronounce “equanimity.” Deck the halls, light the menorah, cut a hole in that box, and hit play!
