Alli and Kati are out this week, but Matthew has recruited independent filmmaker and returning guest Elissa Cohn to help him review this week’s film, a French action film that was a hit at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival: SLEEPLESS NIGHT, from director Frédéric Jardin. Matthew and Elissa take a good look at that, as well as the action genre as a whole, and Elissa discusses some of her own upcoming projects! It’s a fun discussion of a fun film, so check it out!

It’s the movie event of the summer — one of them, anyway — as the heroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe assemble in the unprecedented film from auteur Joss Whedon, THE AVENGERS. The gang takes a look under the hood to see what makes this blockbuster tick, and to see if it lives up to the promise of its ambition. They also take a look back at the original bad-ass team-up film, Akira Kurosawa’s unparalleled SEVEN SAMURAI, from 1954. It’s two must-see films (that go together better than you might think) and a must-hear discussion, so hit play, already.

Two notes: One, we apologize for the audio issues; Matthew suffered a microphone malfunction and sounds less-than-great. Two, there are VERY MINOR spoilers in our AVENGERS discussion; nothing that warrants a spoiler section, but some scenes from the trailer are discussed in vague terms, and one line is repeated and commented on. Nothing that will ruin the film, but if you like to go in totally fresh, consider yourself warned.

This week the gang looks at the painstaking world of stop-motion animation, with the earliest surviving animated feature THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED, from 1926, as a lead-in to Aardman Animation’s latest claymation masterpiece THE PIRATES! BAND OF MISFITS. Alli also checks in with ANONYMOUS and Kati and Matthew weigh in on the surprisingly good 21 JUMP STREET. It’s a fun conversation, so check it out!

This week the Wrong Opinions crew looks at the film that put John Woo on the map for American audiences, the 1989 gun ballet THE KILLER, as well as the film critics are calling the best action film in years — THE RAID: REDEMPTION. Does THE RAID live up to such lofty praise? Does THE KILLER hold up after all these years? And just what is the threshold at which Alli can no longer take a movie seriously (it’s around bullet 500). All this, plus Matthew’s once-in-a-lifetime experience at the Seattle Cinerama, so get listening, already!

The Wrong Opinions crew this week visits two vacation spots you’d be well-advised to stay away from: Stanley Kubrick’s vision of Stephen King’s Overlook Hotel in THE SHINING, and the cabin in the woods of the long-awaited (and aptly titled) Joss Whedon / Drew Goddard collaboration THE CABIN IN THE WOODS. Both will scare you, but both have quite a bit more going on beneath the surface than you think. Our CABIN discussion is spoiler-heavy, so after a brief introduction wherein we implore you to see the film (it’s really good) we get into the nitty-gritty, so please DO NOT listen to that part of the show until you’ve seen the film (but do go see the film, it’s, as mentioned, really good).

James Cameron’s Oscar-winning TITANIC has found its way back into the hearts and minds of the movie-going public, as well as movie theatres, so we not only take a look at the 1997 film to see how it holds up (and how the much ballyhooed 3D post-conversion looks), but we also take a look at two of the film’s predecessors: 1964′s THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN, starring Debbie Reynolds, and 1958′s A NIGHT TO REMEMBER. Which Titanic film is the best Titanic film? The answer may surprise you!

The 84th annual Academy Awards has come and gone, and Matthew, Kati, and Alli are here to break down the tape for you. They discuss what went right (and wrong) in the telecast itself, and also take a look not only at what won and what didn’t, but on how the Academy nominates and votes on films to begin with. They offer their own suggestions for what would make a better show, and Matthew just has one or two more things to say about THE ARTIST, as well. It’s a fun episode, with plenty of STRONG (if not wrong) opinions, so check it out!

Special guest animation expert Robin Holstein joins the rest of the gang — together for the first time in over a month! — for this special look back at the wonderful, magical, and at times heart-wrenching films of Studio Ghibli. They take a look at five of the studio’s earlier films, including the Oscar-winning SPIRITED AWAY and the guaranteed-to-make-you-weep GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES, then go into a review of the studio’s latest effort to reach American audiences: THE SECRET WORLD OF ARRIETTY. It’s a great discussion and a wonderful look at one of the best animation studios — and some of the best filmmakers, period — in the world.

We’re still on a reduced schedule, but Matthew, sap that he is, couldn’t help but pop in and talk about some films that tug on the old heartstrings. Alli and Kati couldn’t make it, but special guest film critic and journalist Kristy Puchko steps up to talk about her favorite romances, and counter some of Matthew’s predictable choices with ones you’ve probably never heard of. Matthew and Kristy have a blast, and along the way manage to discuss the careers of Kenneth Branagh and Billy Wilder, ponder the question of just what makes a 90′s movie a 90′s movie, and talk about when censorship can actually be a good thing (stay with us there). It’s a fantastic conversation with some really excellent film recommendations, so whether you’re single, married, poly, asexual, or an alien anthropologist studying out mating rituals (welcome!) click play and get started.

Coming later this month: Studio Ghibli / SECRET WORLD OF ARRIETTY discussion; post-Oscar roundtable
